Sandra Wakeen, painter, teacher and student has pursued a lifelong devotion to her art.
Following a family tradition of three generations of artists, her father a painter, twin sister a sculptor and three daughters dedicated to the pursuit and passion of becoming a fine artist.

Sandra began her studies at Paier School of Art graduating in 1978 with honors receiving the prestigious Ken Davies Award.  Beginning as an illustrator and portrait artist, she continued her studies at Studio Escalier in France with Tony Ryder and Ted Seth Jacobs, and in Italy for an intensive artists in residency program.

A passionate desire to further her understanding of painting brought Sandra to the studios of David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw and a whole new way of seeing. Their work evoked a feeling for her that is beautiful and painted with excellence. These two masters inspired her not only to explore the surface of a painting, but to also explore her own philosophy in art. Sandra’s work would begin to flourish under their guidance and soon she found acceptance into Oil Painters of America National Shows and Portrait Society of America. She was one of thirty-five artists accepted into Vermont Plein Air Competition in Bennington VT and will be attending The Eric Rhodes Plein Air invitational in the Adirondacks in June, 2015.

Sandra has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur magazine still life issue and American Art Collector magazines. Her most recent accomplishment is being recognized as finalist in The Art Renewal Center 2015 Salon Competition.

Sandra has served on the Board of Directors for the Lyme Art Association, Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists.  She is a founding member of Wethersfield Academy for the Arts where she has served as President and Atelier Director. She created and taught Connecticut’s first formal Atelier program.

This year Sandra opened The Sandra Wakeen Atelier in Somers Ct where she continues to  mentor aspiring artists while at the same pushing her own understanding of painting to the next level. She insists that the learning never stops and forever seeks to find inner beauty and elegance in her work.

Sandra’s work presently resides in the permanent collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Florence Griswold Museum, and the FFAST Museum in Fiesole, Italy.  She was included in Academic Artists 60th Anniversary Exhibition at the Springfield Art Museum. Her work can be seen in galleries throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Sandra has been a Ct artist for over 35 years. She resides in Somers Ct with her Husband Michael a life long partner and supporter of her artistic goals.
