Sue Foell Orange on Gray Oil 20 x 20 inches

Sue Foell

Sue Foell was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. She has early recollections of watching her father, who was a high school art teacher, sketching head studies of her and her siblings, which sparked an interest in portraiture that would blossom later in life. Sue received a degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and although she majored in Computer Science, the many art courses she took while there, and later from several other private instructors, gave her a strong foundation for her paintings today.  After working as a graphic artist for 14 years, she took a portrait workshop from prominent Houston portrait artist, William J. Kalwick, Jr., in 2001.  It was then she knew that portrait painting in oil was what she was born to do and continued to study with Mr. Kalwick for the following four years. Sue also studied still life painting with Bruce Williamson and Qiang Huang; and landscape painting with Roger Dale Brown.

Sue’s passion for oil painting is fueled by the excitement she feels while trying to capture the life of her subject on canvas. Her convincing sense of light and dark, confident brushstrokes, strong drawing skills, and use of rich color give a special strength to her paintings.

Sue and her family relocated to Durham, NC in 2017 where she is excited to continue her artistic journey.

In 2017 Sue was awarded Signature Membership Status in the Oil Painters of America for outstanding accomplishments in representational oil painting.
Other exhibitions and awards include: 2019 Virtuosos of the OPA Exhibition; Oil Painters of America’s 2018, 2016, 2015, 2009, & 2007 National Juried Exhibitions where she received the 2015 Figurative Award of Excellence; Oil Painters of America’s 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2008, & 2007 Eastern Regional Exhibitions; Portrait Society of America’s 2015 Members Only Exhibition where she received 5th place in the Commissioned Portrait category; Salon International 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, & 2007 Juried Exhibitions where she twice received the “Jury’s Top 50” award in addition to three “Honorable Mention” awards.

Artist’s Statement:  “The pure beauty that exists everywhere in this world goes unnoticed by the average person. My goal is to use the gift I’ve been given to recreate that beauty, using paint on a canvas, in such a way as to convince others to open their eyes and take notice. Perhaps then they will be inspired to begin to see the beauty around them as it was meant to be seen and appreciated.”
